Grade 12 Student Organizes Fundraising Concert for Free Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery

Joshua selling donutsWe have announced the 2016 ORC Share the Love Concert for a couple of weeks now.  However, most people don’t realize that this concert is the initiative of a Vancouver high school student.  Joshua has been an ORC volunteer for a couple of years now.  Since he joined our group, he has been active in many behind the scenes work that has helped our missions. In addition to helping us complete inventory, pack, and organize our supplies, Joshua has also initiated his own recruitment and fundraising activities.  We are so happy to have young volunteers like Joshua who has decided to devote his time volunteering to make a difference in the midst of exams and university applications.

Joshua’s first fundraiser for ORC was a Krispy Kreme donut sale which raised $3,000 for ORC’s mission to India in November 2015. The success of this event inspired him to raise more money for ORC. His idea and enthusiasm in organizing a benefit concert for ORC created interest and gained support with his friends, Glad Tidings Church, and Dr. MacLennan, conductor of the Lord Byng Symphony Orchestra.

As a result, on Saturday, January 30, 2016, 48 talented young people will gather for an afternoon of music which will feature the Orchestra’s performance of Symphony No.5 in B Flat Major by Franz Schubert and chamber performances by the youth group of Amazing Agape Christian Church.

Tickets are $20 and includes refreshments and can be purchased at Evenbrite or at the door.  Look forward to seeing everyone next Saturday at 2 pm.

Thank you to Author Hugh Gillard – $20,000+ raised from the sale of his book “What Did You Say”

It is not often that a non-profit has its own ‘resident author’. Hugh Gillard, author of “What Did You Say”, and wife Rosemary recently attended an Authors Day at the Okotoks Public Library in Alberta.

All proceeds from the book, a memoir of growing up with a cleft lip and palate, are donated to ORC.  The book provides a humorous perspective on an individual who overcame his struggles without complaint and ultimately became wildly successful in the business world. It is a truly inspiration to all of us.

Since the book was first published, sales and related donations, have exceeded $20,000 for ORC. To order the book go to www.hughgillard.com

A Huge Thank You to Barwon Health – Australia

Operation Rainbow Canada was the fortunate recipient of $10,000 AUD from  Barwon Health’s Charitable Fund in Australia.

First of all, our members are totally touched that we have received such substantial funding from half a world away.  How did this happen?

It is a tale of a connection between three countries – Canada, Australia and Cambodia and one doctor.  A few years ago, a young Canadian named Patrick Chan was studying medicine in Australia and decided to volunteer in Cambodia.  While at the Preah Ketmelea Hospital, he met the ORC team and was invited to join in our work.  Over the years, Dr. Chan has formed a real attachment to his ORC colleagues in Canada as well as with his Cambodian medical colleagues.  He has personally spearheaded quite a few fundraising activities at the Geelong Hospital, donating large amounts of items of clothing, books and toys to the children in Phnom Penh.

Dr. Chan spent many hours gathering information and presenting ORC’s work in Cambodia  to various organizations in Australia.  Last year, we were informed of a surprise ‘present’!  Barwon Health decided that ORC’s international surgical work was deserving of an award.

As our members know, ORC is very conservative (some might say thrifty) about spending any money except on the children.  It cost approx. $65,000 and ORC members work very hard to fund raise for each trip.

Well, after months of deliberation, the doctors decided to spend the funds on a piece of equipment that would really help our work.  Here it is – the super duper Philips IntelliVue Anesthesia Monitor.  It’s going with the team to India in 2015 and to Cambodia in 2016!  As Dr. Patrick Chan will be joining our missions, he will be able to see the monitor in action first hand and report back on the difference.

Thank you to Associate Professor Eugene Athan and the Barwon Health Medical Staff Group!  Your confidence in our work is much appreciated.

Thank you to UBC Medical Students for MedPlay

ORC volunteer Ben Chan is a third year medical student at UBC.  Earlier this year, Ben and his peers produced a play with the proceeds going to two charities.  ORC is honoured to receive $1,600 from UBC Med Play  to further our work.  For more information on UBC Medplay, click here.
