Hi, this is Mary and I am really excited about my first trip with ORC. My previous experience as a participant in the Sri Lanka- Post Tsunami response with Rose Charities highlighted my wish to make a difference for children. I already work as Pediatrics Nurse at Fraser Heath and BC Children’s Hospital, but I really want to make a difference to kids in developing countries.
I have had so much and been so fortunate in my life, I want to give a gift to a child less fortunate. When one of my friends introduced me to ORC in 2010, I was thrilled to find a group of like-minded people who share my passion.
When not at work, I love the freedom of being outside all seasons with biking, skiing, walking, camping and meeting interesting people.
I am looking forward to improving the smiles of children so that they can have the opportunity to go out and be carefree and be accepted for the person they are inside. I enjoy learning foreign languages and once spent a year learning Russian so that I could interact with local people when I volunteered for the Sochi Olympics.
I’d like to be able to say a few Gujarati greetings to the children, who will likely laugh at my accent. Luckily I will have my team mate Alka Patel, who is fluent, to help me practice on our journey.
