Hi, this is Sachin from Ottawa. Plastic surgeon at the Queensway Carleton Hospital and lecturer at the University of Ottawa by day, garage rock band leader at night. Cambodia 2014 was my first cleft lip and palate mission. It was a tremendously satisfying trip and I still talk about it to my friends and family. These missions gives me an opportunity to use the skills acquired during my fellowship training. I hope to be a good ambassador for ORC and continue the great work the organization has done worldwide.
I would like to help as many patients as we can in the short time we are in India – bring on the surgical slate, Doreen! On a more serious note, I get an absolute thrill seeing the happiness in the faces of our patients. A bonus for me, being based out East is to work again with many familiar faces of ORC. I was born in Canada of Indian ancestry so this mission has an additional connection for me in the area of giving. I’m married to the brilliant and patient Sunita, who is a Pediatric Neurologist at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. We are a busy two career family with two young children; a son named Jayan, age 6 years and a daughter named Keya, who is 3 years old. It looks like they have inherited my love for drums and guitar. So I owe Sunita big time for holding down the fort at home but she is as supportive as I am of this cause. Looking at the smiles of my own children makes me wish that every child in the world can be as happy as they are.
Last thing I want to share with everyone is that I enjoy the vibrant colours of scuba diving; and seeing that this is not an activity readily available in Ottawa, I tried to get away once in a while to warm waters. Looking forward to sharing tips with my other scuba diving teammates during the down times on this trip.
