Hi, I’m Rakesh and I’m the Treasurer of ORC. I jokingly say to the membership that I want to see first-hand how the donor money that I disburse for each trip is spent. In my day job as a partner at DMCL, an accounting firm, I oversee the auditing of public companies. I tell my colleagues that I relax by working with ORC. This way, I get to hang out with a diverse group of medical professionals who are totally non-profit motivated, which is so totally refreshing.
Dr. Rai challenges the Board to maintain 100% volunteer discipline. Without any administrative staff, the workload can be heavy at times but I am very proud to be part of a group that always manages to work together to find a solution.
I’ve always seen myself as a quiet supporter in Vancouver while the doctors and nurses go off on their exciting adventures; but earlier this year, I finally took the “plunge’ and tentatively offered my skills as an administrator for the mission to India. The next thing I knew, Doreen happily gave me a whole pile of mission paperwork with big grin and booked me on the flight. I’m really looking forward to the next two weeks seeing the team in action and helping out wherever I can.
